Wines of Irpinia

Falanghina, Aglianico, Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino: the flagship wines of a company which, in the rugged lands of Irpinia, has succeeded in becoming one of the most interesting wine producers in the whole of Southern Italy. The Feudi di San Gregorio winery is situated in Sorbo Serpico, in the area between Sannio and Irpinia, close to the ancient Appia road. "Feudi di San Gregorio" is a name which dates back to the year 500, when the area was the property of the Catholic State, under the pontificate of Gregorio Magno. Here the hills are comprised of sedimentary and volcanic deposits, the winters are cold and short and the summers mild and long. The climate is, therefore, notably different to that of the rest of Southern Italy and has, since ancient times, made the area perfect wine making territory.

The company was founded by the Capaldo and Ercolino families in 1986, at a time when the wine industry was in the midst of a deep and prolonged crisis. The enterprise aimed to preserve the area's ancient wine making traditions, and, at the same time, maximize their potential. The project also planned to bring new prestige to grapevines such as the Greco, Falanghina, Fiano and Aglianico, and re-launch other, almost unheard of, varieties, such as Syrica. The company's philosophy placed particular emphasis on safeguarding the environment and on investment in research, this led to important collaborations with the University of Naples Department of Food Science and the University of Milan's Institute of Arboreal Cultivation.

To visit the estate's vineyards is to be completely immersed in the natural landscapes of Irpinia, and the dramatically beautiful Calore and Sabato Valleys. In addition to the vineyards, Feudi di San Gregorio has an impressive "Educational Park", with dozens of species of trees and aromatic plants.

Feudi di San Gregorio's wine cellar is an architectural masterpiece, designed by the Milan-based Japanese architect Hikaru Mori. This contemporary construction, much of which is built underground in order to have minimal impact on the surrounding landscape, includes a glass walled tasting room situated in the center of the cellar. The tour of the estate includes a visit to the rose garden and to the hanging gardens, built above the cellar, in which aromatic herbs are grown. The latest additions to Feudi di San Gregorio's repertoire of fine wines are its sparkling DUBL wines obtained from Aglianico, Falanghina and Greco.

Yet another reason to visit this award winning estate: Feudo di San Gregorio's "Marennà'" restaurant was created in collaboration with Heinz Beck, chef of the 3 star Michelin restaurant "La Pergola" at Rome's Cavalieri Hilton.
