A year after the Dale Farm eviction grabbed headlines worldwide, Travellers across the UK continue to face discrimination and homelessness. A hostile mainstream media, racist local government and national policies that further criminalise Traveller communities are in fact making things worse. Any claims our society has to human rights and fairness are untenable.
At a public meeting on September 20th at 7.30pm, the Traveller Solidarity Network will launch the Fight for Sites campaign, a confrontational and much-needed challenge to local and national Government, bailiff companies and the Media, who together construct a cycle of homelessness, evictions and racism. Join us for an evening of discussion about racism, evictions, the Localism Act and how we can resist, in preparation for our first mass action on the 19th October, the first anniversary of the Dale Farm eviction. The meeting will feature experts on housing, Traveller rights, solidarity activists as well as Travellers themselves, discussing the current situation and what we can all doabout it.For many Travellers, the lack of a secure place to live lies at the heart of the discrimination they face. A severe shortfall of sites in the UK limits access to public services, including education and healthcare, and exposes communities to harassment from rightwing local residents, local councils, bailiffs and the police. Every day families are moved on or evicted, often from land that they own. In England there is a shortage of over 4,000 individual caravan pitches, and thus an increased pressure for Travellers to move into bricks and mortar housing against their will and with negative effects on health, wellbeing and community [EHRC, 2010]. The Coalition government’s Localism Act has made the situation worse – abolishing previous targets for caravan site provision whilst strengthening eviction and police move-on powers.
